Thornton State Beach is located on the Pacific coast of Daly City, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. As of 2009, this beach is closed to the public. This is due to a precaution of waves, storms, and earthquakes. However, hikers and horseback riders can enjoy the ocean view. The climate is Mediterranean which means that the weather is cold and windy. During the summer, fog is common.

The Thornton State Beach is located at 36°58'42"N 121°56'15"W. The Thornton State Beach is in Daly City, at the end of Thornton Beach Road. Follow John Daly Boulevard west from Interstate 280 across Skyline Boulevard into Thornton State Beach. From Skyline Boulevard, turn west at the intersection with John Daly Boulevard into Thornton State Beach. From the parking area or the stables, proceed to the dunes on old Thornton Beach Road. The Bay Area Ridge Trail begins where the road meets the dunes. Thornton State Beach's address is Thornton Beach Rd, Daly City, CA 94015 and can be contacted at 831-335-6318.
